Localisation Labs

The Localisation Labs initiative serves as a cornerstone of NEAR's comprehensive approach to supporting and organizing local and national organizations in the humanitarian and development sectors to reinvent an aid system to one that is locally led through incremental, cultural and transformative change. These labs provide a structured platform for facilitating the development of country, sub-regional and regional level strategies, policies, and action plans that align with NEAR's principles of inclusivity and equity.

Purpose: Designed to empower local actors, the Localisation Labs facilitate the co-creation of solutions tailored to the unique challenges and aspirations of their respective communities. By fostering a culture of continuous learning, and knowledge sharing, , these labs aim to create an environment where local actors can lead and influence the operationalization of localisation commitments.

Functionality: The Localisation Labs serve as dynamic and inclusive spaces where local civil society actors, alongside regional and international stakeholders, converge to engage in critical dialogue, strategic planning, and action-oriented initiatives. Through structured workstreams such as Movement Building, Building Bridges, Solutions, and Learning, participants collaborate to reshape the aid landscape.

Values: Embodying principles of inclusivity, equity, and empowerment, the labs foster a culture of openness, respect, and mutual learning. They recognize the diversity of perspectives and experiences brought forth by participants, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.

Approach: Utilizing a multi-faceted approach, the Localisation Labs employ structured workstreams to drive meaningful change. Movement Building establishes the foundation, while Building Bridges ensures trust building amongst other humanitarian, peace building and development actors. Solutions Workstream focuses on turning challenges into tangible strategies, and Learning Workstream acts as a feedback mechanism for continuous improvement.

Impact: Through genuine collaboration, innovation, and accountability, the Localisation Labs play a pivotal role in reimagining traditional aid systems. They empower local organizations to lead and influence the trajectory of humanitarian and development efforts, ultimately cultivating a stronger, more engaged network of local organizations.
