NEAR STANDS IN SOLIDARITY WITH TURKISH AND SYRIAN COMMUNITIES AFFFECTED BY THE EARTHQUAKE
We would like to offer our sincerest condolences to those who have lost loved ones in the recent earthquake in Syria and Türkiye. In the days since the tragedy struck, we have been touched by the unceasing efforts of local and community organisations in joining together and mounting a response, despite being personally affected. Watching Turkish and Syrian organisations rally round to quickly and efficiently respond to this emergency, reminds us once again just how effective and critical LNNGOs are. Providing a range of emergency services from tents and hot meals to dignity packs for women and formula for babies, our members and partners have been able to coordinate among themselves and ensure the response is timely and appropriate. They need more funding to be made available now so they can continue to provide such immediate and vital support. The devastation caused to a region already vulnerable is incalculable. With the limited resources available in the region, there is an urgent need for support to aid recovery and reconstruction efforts. NEAR is currently working on an innovative approach to leverage philanthropic, individual and religious giving, while also facilitating technical and financial support from the Global South. This approach will prioritise the voices and actions of local organisations and communities in the affected areas. In the interim we stand in solidarity with all communities affected and ready to provide support to our members and partners in the region.

NEAR launches its innovative Change Fund and awards first grants to countries in crises.
Through its global Change Fund, The Network for Empowered Aid Response (NEAR) this week granted emergency funding to four local organisations leading the response to humanitarian crises in South Sudan, Somalia and Afghanistan.
